In my free time, I have helped friends gathered around the world to help edit English subtitles for Japanese tokusatsu (special effects) superhero shows, a genre of entertainment which I am deeply passionate about. In 2018, one of our projects, subtitles for the 1985 Toei Co. Ltd. series MEGABEAST INVESTIGATOR JUSPION were licensed for use by Discotek Ltd., a nationally recognized anime and live-action home video distributor. I was paid for my part on this work, and I am credited on the disc for my editing work. It was an honor to be involved with this release, as it marked the first time in the United States that an entry into Toei’s Metal Hero line of programming from the 1980’s and 1990’s finally made it into the country in an unedited, uncut form with an English translation. Our hope is that this paves the way for future releases to expand the fanbase and love for this entertaining genre of media. My work as a QC’er (Quality Checker) has also spurred me to learn more Japanese in my free time, with aspirations to professionally translate and learn more to work on future projects and help others. This also allowed me to flex my editing and writing muscles, adapting quirks, wordplay and cultural idioms in ways that could be reflected and fitting for English-speaking audiences while not losing the translator’s meaning in the process.
