I was tasked with following a unique subculture, a group of people with a common connection, of our choice.
I chose to cover the Benedictine Senior League in Midlothian, Virginia, in order to tell their story. Every Thursday I would wake up, drive to Sunset Lanes, and spend the morning immersing myself in the not-so-competitive nature of this close group of friends.
TAKE AWAYS:
A story needs a human element to it in order for the audience to connect. This project not only gave me the chance to become deeply immersed in an unfamiliar culture, it also let me tell a compelling and sincere story which went beyond the initial “bowling” focus. It should be noted that this film was later shown to the VCU Brandcenter’s board of directors. From start to finish this was a labor of love for me.
